The Relationship between Principals' Leadership Styles and School Culture, as Assessed by Teachers

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Mississippi College
Leadership and school culture are two factors that have a great impact in schools today. Much research has focused on leaders, but more is needed on the culture of schools. Improving both elements of leadership and school culture may also increase other challenges that schools face such as student achievement. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the leadership style of high school principals and the impact it has on school culture as perceived by teachers. The participants for this study included 60 high school teachers and five administrators from 5 high schools located in five school districts in the state of Mississippi. The School Culture Survey and Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Leader Form 5X (MLQ) were used to collect data in this investigative study. The School Culture Survey focuses on the following 6 elements of school culture: collaborative leadership, teacher collaboration, unity of purpose, professional development, collegial support, and learning partnership. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Leader Form 5X will be used to identify the leadership styles of principals as transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data collected from the surveys. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient test, simple regression, MANOVA, and one-sample t-test were used as evaluation tools to compare the outcomes of the factors tested. The research established a weak significance linear correlation between leadership style and school culture as well as with leadership style and school grade.
