An Examination of Tinto's Persistence Theory in First Generation Latino and Latina Students at One Community College in Southeast Texas
Lopez, Stephen F.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This qualitative phenomenological studied investigated the lived experiences of first generation Latino and Latina community college students who share common behaviors in their pursuit of educational attainment. Based on Tinto's (1994, 2002) persistence theory a narrative investigation collected data through interviews from 10 first generation Latino and Latina community college students. The results of the study indicate first generation Latino and Latina community college student persistence and success are achievable if the environment is conducive to their learning. Findings also indicated that through individual perseverance they overcame academic, financial, cultural and social barriers that hindered their education success. This study provides higher education institutions, first generation Latino and Latina students and their families the importance of academic, financial, and social support as key indicators that lead to student success.
