Professional Development for Elementary Educators: Creating a Trauma-Informed Classroom
Bonk, Ivy Teresa
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regent University
In classrooms all across America, educators stand between the tension of providing quality instruction and meeting the need of all students. This difficulty reveals the need to equip educators to engage and educate those students with barriers and challenges that the negative impact of emotional and psychological trauma, that result from child maltreatment, causes. Educators not trained in trauma can inadvertently reinforce the behavior by their lack of response or attention. In this project, the author offers tools and resources that will aid educators in engaging the hardest to reach students while meeting the charge of effectiveness and increased results. By equipping educators with knowledge on the affective, behavioral, and cognitive impact of trauma on learning, they can help move all students toward a place of safety and competence.
