Systems of Postsecondary Education Institutions Reported in the IPEDS Institutional Characteristics Component

This paper reviews the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) "system" definition to determine if it accurately reflects the general understanding of a "system" in the higher education community. In addition, this paper examines systems that have been reported to IPEDS to determine if each fits the definition. Finally, the paper provides recommendations for improving data collection, including clarifications to instructions.
