Student Retention Indicators Benchmark Report for Four-Year and Two-Year Institutions, 2013. Noel-Levitz Report on Undergraduate Trends in Enrollment Management. Higher Ed Benchmarks
Noel-Levitz, Inc.
This biennial report from Noel-Levitz assists colleges and universities with raising the bar on student retention and degree completion subgoals by benchmarking key predictive indicators such as term-to-term persistence and the ratio of credit hours completed vs. credit hours attempted. The report is based on a Web-based poll of campus officials in the fall of 2012, in which respondents reported official census data from the 2011-2012 academic year and from early fall 2012. Among the highlights reported: (1) At four-year private institutions, first-year students completed 93 percent of the credit hours they attempted in fall 2011 (median rate) and their persistence to the next term was 92 percent at the median. Also, for second-year students, median first-to-second term persistence was 94 percent, and median second-to-third-year retention was 84 percent; (2) At four-year public institutions, first-year students completed 87 percent of the credit hours they attempted in fall 2011 (median rate) and their persistence to the next term was 89 percent at the median. Also, for second-year students, median first-to-second term persistence was 93 percent, and median second-to-third-year retention was 81 percent; (3) At two-year public institutions, first-year students completed 77 percent of the credit hours they attempted in fall 2011 (median rate) and their persistence to the next term was 81 percent at the median. Also, for second-year students, median first-to-second term persistence was 85 percent, and median second-to-third-year retention was 53 percent; and (4) For four-year institutions, private and public, this report found significant variances by institutional selectivity and for students admitted conditionally. A section on how to use the benchmarks in this report is appended. [See the: Noel-Levitz Report, 2011 at ED536417.]
