The Artist as Online Learner
Julian, June
Online Submission, Paper presented at the National Conference of Liberal Arts and the Education of Artists (New York, NY, Oct 2003)
Online teaching provides a new avenue for the human imagination, another way for artists and teachers to creatively participate in the predominant cultural form of our time, the Internet. Several online university courses are presented as examples of communities of learners in action. They provide an overview of what was found to be effective in digital learning ecologies. The contrasting arguments of both Postman, and Nardi and O'Day are presented in a series of examples of Problems and Solutions. The problem is the difficulty of effective human communication. This action research shows that online learning provides a good way to extend the human dialogue into new dimensions for teaching, for learning, and for understanding.
