Strategies Nurse Managers Used to Offset Challenges during Electronic Medical Records Implementation: A Case Study
Easterling, Latasha
ProQuest LLC, D.H.A. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive case study was to discover successful approaches used, by nurse managers, to reduce barriers during the implementation of electronic medical record system in one hospital. Fourteen nurse managers were interviewed from an academic health science center in Mississippi. A pilot study was conducted to validate the interview question tool and the demographic survey. The sample size was undetermined; data saturation was used as a process to ensure that the topic was adequately covered. The researcher asked 11 interview questions. The intent of these interview questions were to assist in identifying strategies used, by nurse managers, to overcome challenges during the implementation of a new electronic medical record. The researcher used focus groups as well as field notes to assist in collecting data. The researcher used N'Vivo™ to identify key themes that can assist in identifying strategies. Two themes emerged from the data collected: challenges/barriers of implementing an EMR, and strategies to overcome those barriers. Nine common challenges/barriers were discovered along with the strategies that were used to overcome them. These strategies can assist nurse managers in limiting impact on their staff's workflow and patient care. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
