Furthering Higher Education Possibilities through Massive Open Online Courses
Mesquita, Anabela, Ed.; Peres, Paula, Ed.
IGI Global
In recent years, technological advancements have enabled higher-learning institutions to offer millions of independent learners the opportunity to participate in open-access online courses. As this practice expands, drawing considerable media attention, questions continue to arise regarding pedagogical methodology and the long-term viability of open learning. Furthering Higher Education Possibilities through Massive Open Online Courses seeks to provide a space for discussion of MOOCs: what they mean for the learning process, how they are redefining the concept of a classroom, and what effects they may have on the role of teachers. Featuring emerging research on a variety of topics relating to distance education, informal learning, as well as educational costs and funding, this book is aimed at teachers, administrators, business professionals, and designers of both curricular resources and e-classroom technology. Following a foreword (Manuel Moreira da Silva) and a preface (Paula Peres, Anabela Mesquita), chapters include: (1) MOOCs--A Challenge or an Opportunity: A Personal View (Keld Hvam); (2) Redemption through MOOCs? Valuing Aggregation and Pricing Disaggregation in Higher Education Markets (David Starr-Glass); (3) The Use of MOOCs in the Continuing Education of Individuals and Organisations (Antonios S. Andreatos); (4) MOOCs Business Models (Manzoor, Amir); (5) Requirements Capture analysis for MOOCS in Higher Education (Neil Andrew Gordon, Mike Brayshaw); (6) Learning Theories Supporting Massive Open Online Courses (Dennis A. Coelho); (7) Learning Objects in MOOC: Good Practice for Learning Objects (Ann Marcus-Quinn, Ian Clancy); (8) Assessment Activities in Massive Open On-Line Courses: Assessment Activities in MOOCs (Pedro J. Muñoz-Merino, José A. Ruipérez-Valiente, Juan Luis Sanz Moreno, Carlos Delgado Kloos ); (9) Using Visualization to Understand Transformations in Learning and Design in MOOCs (Roy Williams, Jenny Mackness, Jutta Pauschenwein); (10) MOOC Bullying in Schools: The First Experience in a Portuguese Tertiary Inst ( Ana Luísa Torres, Nuno Bordalo Pacheco, João Galego, Teresa Pacheco, José Mauricio Dias, Cristina Maria Novo); (11) Toward Mobile Assisted Language MOOCs (Timothy Read); and (12) Massive Online Open Course Assisted Mechatronics Learning: A Hybrid Approach (Bo Xing). A section about the contributors and an index are included.
