Roles, Responsibilities, Challenges, and Rewards: The Lived Experience of ESL Department Chairs in Community Colleges

This study addresses the lived experience of ESL department chairs in California community colleges. It adds to existing literature that aims to support these individuals who are serving in critical roles in institutions of higher education. Using phenomenological methods, four ESL department chairs were interviewed to explore their journeys towards their current positions, their responsibilities, challenges, rewards, and supports, and, more generally, the essence of what it means to be an ESL department chair. The results of this study provide strength and support to ESL leaders by giving a voice to their experiences and by raising awareness of unique ESL issues. Additionally, it provides insight to administrators and other educational leaders on ways to produce willing and consistent department chair leadership, which will inevitably improve the educational experience for students.
