Infusing the School Counseling Internship with a Global Perspective to Promote Ego Development, Moral Reasoning, and Ethnocultural Empathy: A Deliberate Psychological Education
Robertson, Derek Lane
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The College of William and Mary
This study utilized a quasi-experimental, pre and posttest, comparison group design to determine the effects of a semester long deliberate psychological education (DPE), infused with a global perspective to promote ego development, moral reasoning and ethnocultural empathy in an intervention group composed of school counseling interns. The relationship between ego development and moral reasoning with ethnocultural empathy was also explored. While the intervention did not produce significant increases over the comparison group on the dependent measures, the sample as a whole did have significant increases in ego development and ethnocultural empathy suggesting that the internship alone may have the necessary components to promote growth on these constructs. Weaknesses in the DPE and the relatively short length of the intervention may have resulted in the lack of significant findings. These results support other research on ego development suggesting interventions rarely achieve movement beyond the Conscientious (E6) level and that moral dilemma discussions may be necessary to promote moral reasoning. Additionally the study found a significant positive correlation between moral reasoning and ethnocultural empathy but no relationship between ego development and ethnocultural empathy. A small homogenous sample was a key limitation for this study. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
