The Influence of an After School Single Gender Literacy Community on the Early-Adolescent Female's Voice
Smith-Brown, Jibby L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Kentucky University
Despite the research of the 20th and 21st centuries, the ability to sustain voice in our adolescent females continues to present a concern. This qualitative study in educational and literacy research uncovers an educational framework that can strengthen the voice of adolescent females by using non-traditional methods and female preferred learning styles via a safe, nurturing, and therapeutic learning environment where habits of thinking, persistence, responsible risk taking, assertiveness, and increased academic achievement are the results. An analysis of the results is triangulated using the researcher's reflexive journal, the participants' reflective journal, and personal interviews. They yield the female participants' sustained ability to (1) achieve voice, (2) persist when tasks are difficult and emotionally overwhelming, (3) achieve success inside and outside of the classroom, and (4) be assertive. Their stories add nuance and understanding of what adolescent females need socially, emotionally, and academically to achieve greatness and rise to their fullest human potential.
