Assessing Morphological Awareness as a Predictor of Academic Performance and Performance on the National Physical Therapy Examination
Moran, Kelley A.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilkes University
The primary purpose of this study was to validate a method for assessing Morphological Awareness (MA) using multimorphemic words commonly used in the academic and clinical practice settings of physical therapy. The Medical Morphology Test (MMT) was developed for this study and was compared to scores on the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (NDRT©). The NDRT© has previously been shown to be a predictor of both academic performance and performance on the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). A secondary purpose of the study was to determine if the MMT could be used as a predictor of academic performance as measured by Grade Point Average (GPA) or to predict number of attempts to pass the NPTE. Pearson Correlations were used to compare scores on the NDRT© and MMT. Regression analysis was used to determine the predictive value of the MMT for academic performance and performance on the NPTE. Participants for this study consisted of 32 alumni of a single physical therapy program. Thirty of the participants completed both the NDRT© and MMT, two did not complete the NDRT©. Twenty-one of the participants had passed the NPTE© on the first attempt. Eleven of the subjects required between two and seven attempts to pass the NPTE. Results from this study found that there was a statistically significant relationship between scores on the MMT and NDRT©. Scores on the MMT were able to predict GPA and classify participants as members of a group who passed the NPTE on the first attempt or not, but scores on the MMT were not able to predict the actual number of attempts to pass the NPTE©.
