Sustaining the Image of Life: A Grounded Theory Study of Funeral Service Education
Kelly, Sharen
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Fielding Graduate University
This grounded theory dissertation explores the educational experiences of funeral service students as they matriculate through the college of funeral service. Student interviews were utilized to explore the world of funeral service education. The analysis of the data led to the discovery of the theory, "Sustaining the Image of Life." The theory contains within it the categorical process of being mindful, which is the element of self-awareness that embodies the educational experiences of funeral service students. Further analysis of the data revealed the conceptualization of the properties, cultivating relationships and constructing the memory picture, and the dimensions, establishing trust through communication, nurturing, embalming, restoring, and dressing that authenticate the generated theory. Funeral service students who subscribe to the theory of "Sustaining the Image of Life" experience a masterylevel of professionalism in the execution of their professional duties, as well as the development of interpersonal relationships with peers and future clients. Moreover, the successful matriculation of funeral service students through the paradigm of "Sustaining the Image of Life" transitions them from funeral service students to licensed funeral service practitioners, funeral directors, and embalmers.
