The Role of Faculty in Internationalizing the Undergraduate Curriculum and Classroom. CBIE Research Millennium Series No. 8
Bond, Sheryl L.; Qian, Jun; Huang, Jinyan
Canadian Bureau for International Education
Most faculty, administrators, as well as public and private sector leaders, name the curriculum as the most important feature of any internationalization strategy. To internationalize the undergraduate curriculum, however, requires careful reexamination of the curricula, scrutinizing the "more of the same" thinking that sometimes permeates academic departments. Such scrutiny is the proprietary domain of faculty members whose responsibility is to determine what they teach and how they teach it. Based on a national survey of over 150 college and university faculty members and international student advisers/work and study abroad advisers, this report explores the current state of internationalization of the undergraduate curriculum and identifies best practices. Four appendices present: (1) Faculty and the Internationalization of the Curriculum & Classroom Experience (survey); (2) Disciplines Identified by College and University Participants; (3) Summary of Faculty Survey Findings by Questions & Significant Differences; and (4) Attributes of Participants which Significantly Influence Responses by Question.
