Education on the Aging: A Selected Annotated Bibliography. Bulletin, 1958, No. 11
Ward, Betty Arnett
Office of Education, US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare
Since aging has become a field of increasing interest, many requests for information on the educational aspects of the subject have been received in the Office of Education. Because of the growing number of these requests, and because so few items bearing on education are included in the reference lists in the general field of aging, this bibliography was prepared. It should service both the broad field of adult education and the growing profession of gerontology. This bibliography is a listing of selected titles bearing directly or indirectly upon educational programs and activities designed for the primary purpose of developing skills, knowledge, habits, or attitudes appropriate and necessary for vital, purposeful living during the years of later maturity. The references are arranged in sections reflecting the influence and research interests of a wide variety of disciplines and specialties within the broad field of aging. The annotations are, for the most part, brief summary descriptions of readily accessible titles and materials which may help the reader to make selections in accordance with his own needs and with those of the older adult participant. The bibliography should be useful to social gerontologists, adult education administrators and teachers, personnel managers and placement officers, industrial training supervisors, vocational and rehabilitation counselors, museum staff personnel, and volunteers who are currently engaged in full- or part-time work with the aging. Further, it should serve the needs of librarians in the development of professional and special collections of materials for use in reading courses, or for use in displays and exhibits in connection with general training conferences, workshops, and institutes. The selected items as they relate to education should: (1) Throw light on the role of professional workers, the lay leader, the aging individual, and the officials and members of community organizations in promoting improved attitudes toward aging and the aged; (2) provide information about surveys and research studies in the field of aging and related fields; and (3) describe a variety of helpful programs which are both meeting various needs of older adults and utilizing their talents and resources for the good of the community and the Nation.
