Special Features in City School Systems. Bulletin, 1913, No. 31. Whole Number 541
United States Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
All superintendents of schools in cities of 5,000 population and over were recently invited by the United States Commissioner of Education to describe plans or methods they had worked out in their respective schools during the past few years. In response to this invitation, several hundred letters were received. Some gave complete accounts of one or two new things successfully accomplished or of experiments. This bulletin brings together extracts from many of the letters and from school reports referred to in other letters. Plans, methods, and devices that have been actually worked out or that are now being tested are of more interest to the practical school man that what some one thinks should be done. The main purpose is to call attention to the new and promising things attempted in city schools and especially in the schools of the smaller cities. This bulletin contains the following topics: (1) Introduction; (2) All-year school; (3) Cooperative industrial courses; (4) Home study; (5) Honor league; (6) Improvement of teachers; (7) Caring for the pupils' health; (8) Janitor service; (9) Literary and club work; (10) Promotion of teachers on qualification and efficiency; (11) Promotion of pupils; (12) School improvement associations; (13) School gardens; (14) Special schools and classes; (15) Segregation of the sexes; (16) School as employment bureau; (17) School as employment bureau; (18) Simplification of the course of study; (19) Training for citizenship; (20) Uniform grammatical terms; and (21) Notes.
