Accredited Higher Institutions, 1938. Bulletin, 1938, No. 16
Ratcliffe, Ella B.
Office of Education, United States Department of the Interior
An edition of the bulletin on accredited institutions of higher education has been published at approximately four-year intervals since the first issue in 1917, the last being published in 1934. It is used by university and college officers in evaluating transfer credits, by State departments of education in checking teachers' credentials, by high school students as a guide to recognized institutions, and by Federal government agencies to aid them in various phases of their work. The Introduction describes recent changes in the accrediting movement, particularly in the areas of engineering, forestry, theology, nursing, dentistry, and architecture. Part I describes and provides information about the standards of the national and regional accrediting associations, and lists the universities and colleges, junior colleges, and teacher-training institutions accredited by each of the organizations: (1) Association of American Universities; (2) Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; (3) New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; (4) North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; (5) Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools; (6) Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; (7) American Association of Teachers Colleges; and (8) American Association of Junior Colleges. Part II describes the policies and standards of the State universities and State Departments of Education, and lists the approved institutions in each of the 48 States and District of Columbia. Part III identifies, in tabular form, the professional and technical schools accredited, approved, or classified by these national organizations: (1) American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy; (2) American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business; (3) American Association of Schools and Departments of Journalism; (4) American Association of Schools of Social Work; (5) American Association of Theological Schools; (6) American Bar Association; (7) American Library Association; (8) American Medical Association; (9) American Osteopathic Association; (10) Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture; (11) Engineers' Council for Professional Development; (12) International Association of Boards of Examiners in Optometry; and (13) National Association of Schools of Music. An index is included. (Contains 37 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.]
