The Georgia Club at the State Normal School, Athens, Georgia, for the Study of Rural Sociology. Bulletin, 1913, No. 23. Whole Number 533
Branson, E. C.

In all States of the Union having a large rural population, efforts are made to adjust the work of the country schools to the needs of country life. There is a widespread feeling that the schools must become a more important factor in country life than they have been and contribute more toward the solution of its problems. To that end normal schools which prepare teachers for public schools in rural communities are trying to interest their students in social and economic conditions in the country and to show them how to conduct investigations in regard to the facts of these conditions. One of the most successful attempts to do this of which the bureau has any information has been made through the Georgia Club for the Study of Rural Sociology at the State Normal School at Athens, Georgia. The account of this club and its work given in this bulletin contains many valuable suggestions for similar work in other schools and by groups of teachers and individuals in the country. Contents include: (1) History; (2) The home State a proper curriculum study; (3) Economics and sociology in normal school curriculums; (4) The creed of the Georgia Club; (5) What studying Georgia means to the Georgia Club; (6) General State problems--Tables and maps; (7) Skeleton outline of county studies; (8) A specimen county narrative; (9) Club meetings: Club studies and discussions; and (10) County surveys: Their uses and values. (Contains 2 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.]
