Service Instruction of American Corporations. Bulletin, 1916, No. 34
Fuld, Leonhard Felix
Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
This bulletin provides, in four parts, information about the qualifications, selection and training of personnel in various service industries. Service Instruction of Department Stores describes the sales force of most department stores, composed chiefly of women, and the lack of team spirit; outlines the physical education program to monitor their medical and dental health and improve their physical condition through instruction and recreational activities; explains the vocational training options, such as issuing efficiency bulletins for current staff and store system instruction for new hires; identifies a continuation instruction program offered within some stores to ensure that boys and girls who leave school to work can complete their education; and concludes with a description of prevocational training for high school students and the training of teachers for the salesmanship, vocational and prevocational programs in stores. Service Instruction of Telephone Companies addresses the two employee categories at the New York Telephone Company that require service instruction--the operator, who is paid while attending a four-week course in the operators' school, and plant employees, who receive inspectors' and installers' training. Typical Service Instruction in Other Industries comprises: (1) General Electric Co. of Schenectady, N.Y., including the apprentice courses for various trades, courses for student engineers for college graduates entering the workforce, and evening instruction to further develop clerical employees; (2) The Lakeside Press of Chicago, Illinois apprenticeship program for boys entering the sixth most important occupation in the world; (3) Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. correspondence course for agents and home office employees, distribution of literature to improve the health and hygiene of all employees, classroom instruction for employees seeking advancement, and recreational instruction for men and women engaged in the sedentary pursuits of office work; and (4) D. E. Sicher & Co., New York, instruction including hygiene and safety, as well as day-time factory classes in an effort to eliminate illiteracy among the foreign-born employees. Finally, Service Instruction of the City of New York outlines the training provided in the Police Training School for probationers and officers; the Fire College programs for officers, engineers, probationers and the fire companies; pamphlets distributed to duty officers in the Street Cleaning Department to help train the men under their command; the comprehensive system of service instruction developed by the College of the City of New York for municipal employees, including subcollegiate and collegiate courses; and the instruction in Physical Education to offset tension of mental activities through activities at recreation facilities.
