Higher Education Biennial Survey, 1922-1924. Bulletin, 1926, No. 20
Klein, Arthur J.
Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
The administrators and faculties of higher educational institutions are frequently so engaged in the problems of individual institutions that they do not find time nor occasion to take stock at periodic intervals of the activities and general progress of the universities and colleges of the United States. The author was tasked to prepare this review of matters which engaged much of the attention of the higher educational institutions of the United States during the period 1922 to 1924. The influence of the rising cost of higher education upon institutional administration and ideals is presented in connection with the steps proposed or taken to meet changing conditions. Methods of orienting the college freshman in his new environment are discussed together with experiments and proposals for changes which will further improve standards of scholarship, teaching methods, and adjustment of college work to the public, social, and economic life of college graduates. This bulletin focuses on these topics: (1) Cost of higher education; (2) Selective processes; (3) Increase of fees; (4) Entrance examinations; (5) Standards of admission and of institutional accrediting; (6) Grade limitations; (7) Character scoring; (8) Psychological tests; (9) Freshman problems; (10) Sectioning classes; (11) Orientation courses; (12) Curriculum revision; (13) Teaching methods; (14) Special honors and distinctions; (15) Honors courses; (16) Graduate work; (17) Social and college life; (18) Outside contacts; and (19) Junior colleges.
