A Study of the Impact of a Leadership Development Program on a Community College's Front-Line and Middle Managers
Adcock-Shantz, Jennifer K.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
Current research indicates that community colleges are facing what has been termed a "leadership crisis" due to the high number of Baby Boomers retiring and those planning to retire in the next several years (McCall, 2006; Bagnato, 2004; Shults, 2001). In 2006, the American Association of Community Colleges recommended community colleges create a "Grow-Your-Own" leadership development program in response to the number of sooner-than-later retirements. Many of the nation's community colleges heeded the recommendation and designed their own leadership development programs. This mixed methods study analyzed the impact of a specific southwestern community college's "Grow-Your-Own" leadership development program on the development of leadership skills for the college's front-line and middle managers. Conclusions from statistical tests conducted on the pre- and post-assessment data showed no significance except one instance which was attributable to growth. In addition, conclusions from qualitative data collected during one-on-one interviews indicate the college's leadership development program did have an impact front-line and middle managers at the southwestern community college.
