Terrier, Byron P.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This study was designed to investigate school superintendent and school board member perceptions of the relative importance of the Texas State Board of Educator Certification competencies required to be a successful leader of a Texas public school system. School districts within seven of the Regional Education Service Centers in Texas were contacted to participate in the study. Using survey methods, data were collected from 57 superintendents and 43 school board members. Data analysis included specific statistical methodology in answering each research question. Analysis of data included comparison of means using t-tests. Findings reported there were few significant differences between superintendent and school board member perceptions of the competencies required to be a successful leader of a Texas public school system. Superintendents and school board members agreed on which competencies were most and least important to educational leadership in Texas. The findings in this study suggested that superintendent and school board member training programs are providing appropriate training for these leaders to understand and come to agreement on what is important for the district leader to be focusing.
