This dissertation explores the impact of information technology on progressive and regressive values in society from the perspective of one international foundation and four of its technology-related programs. Through a critical interpretive approach employing an instrumental multiple-case method, a framework to help explain the influence of technology within society was developed. This conceptual framework describes the progressive values of cooperation, affinity, and creativity as well as the regressive values of aggressiveness, detachment, and control. In addition, the ways in which the non-profit sector's use of technology contributes to empowerment and reification were also examined. The impact of the current massive and disruptive technological transformation is a contentious and unresolved question that is impacting an extraordinary number of people around the world. The results of this research have a number of implications for practitioners, administrators, technologists, educators and others concerned with using technology as a platform for policy and social change.
