Acceptance of Nontraditional Scholarship at LCME Accredited Medical Schools
Candler, Christopher Scott
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Arkansas
The definition and nature of scholarship is undergoing a transformation across North American medical schools. Some medical schools have adopted broadened views of scholarship that recognize and reward nontraditional scholarly works. This study investigated whether nontraditional scholarly works such as MedEdPORTAL publications contribute to faculty advancement at LCME accredited medical schools. The study assessed the extent to which MedEdPORTAL publications contribute to faculty advancement and explored the possibility of a relationship between the emphasis the medical school has placed on traditional biomedical research and the extent to which the institution values MedEdPORTAL publications as meaningful contributions to promotion and tenure decisions. A cross-sectional survey of published MedEdPORTAL authors yielded 326 responses that represented 64% of LCME accredited medical schools. The results suggest that scholarly products such as MedEdPORTAL publications are accepted at some but not all institutions and that no significant relationship exists between the emphasis the medical school has placed on traditional research and the extent to which the institution values MedEdPORTAL publications as meaningful contributions to promotion and tenure decisions.
