ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Sam Houston State University
The purpose of my study was to identify reasons why international students chose to continue in college without graduating and what factors impacted successful graduation of international students. After selecting a purposeful sample of international students from an urban community college, interviews were conducted and responses analyzed. Analyses revealed several factors that contributed to the problem. The major concerns discovered were: (a) problems in international advising and counseling, (b) problems with the learning environment, and (c) lack of information provided to students. One concern which appeared most frequently was the advising of international students. Several recommendations were made based on the findings to improve current conditions at the institution. Recommendations included providing workshops to advisors to assure that advisory functions and students' needs were consistent, providing a mandatory day-long orientation for all new students, and creating opportunities for staff and student interaction. Finally, further research that would extend to faculty and administrators was recommended. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
