Voices of Art Teachers: Understanding the Effects of NCLB on Art Education
Myers, Deborah
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Oklahoma State University
Scope and Method of Study: This descriptive exploratory study utilizes a survey and interviews for collecting data pertinent to the demographics, views, attitudes and perspectives of art educators as they experience No Child Left Behind initiatives in their classrooms. Questionnaires were analyzed with Qualtrics software for statistical information related to demographics, views and attitudes of art educators. The open ended question in the survey and interviews were analyzed with content analysis to explore the relationships between art educators' views, attitudes and perspectives. The method of phenomenology has guided this study in attempt to understand and describe the lived experiences of art educators and the effects of NCLB policy on art education. Findings and Conclusions: Themes that emerged from the data collection were art teachers' stress, limited resources, and confusion about NCLB policy and testing. These art teachers described the constraints of a test directed curriculum and how time devoted to remediation instead of the arts had led to a sense of conformity and the loss of a creative and safe environment for the arts. They discussed their perceptions of a loss of administrative support, communication and teacher collaboration as they struggled with the challenges and professional obstacles required in keeping up with initiatives that just didn't seem to make sense, like "Drop Everything and Read." Although a few art teachers had positive feelings towards NCLB, certain themes brought to light the lived experiences of art teachers who observed a lack of engagement from students and the feeling that some students are being left behind.
