The Experience of Therapists and Rural Clients Using Internet Therapy Services
Ash, Shannon Christine
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University, San Diego
This qualitative study explored the experiences of therapists and clients who were involved with online therapeutic interventions. Specifically, this study looked at the experiences of clients who live in rural areas and who struggle with substance use issues as previous research has indicated a need for creative ways of reaching these populations. The experiences of therapists treating individuals over the internet were also looked at in order to better understand their perspectives on what has worked well in treatment and possible improvements that could be made. Internet Therapy has been defined for the purposes of this study as a therapeutic session which utilizes email or an instant chat service. Questions asked of participants were designed to elicit responses that described the process of Internet Therapy including factors that contributed to or hindered its efficacy. A qualitative investigative approach was used to analyze data and uncover themes that emerged from the information gathered. Nine major themes emerged from data collected in this study. Themes were also discussed in relation to existing literature. Significant information that was not part of a theme but seemed significant in some way was also discussed. Themes that developed from data gathered in the current investigation will hopefully contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the process of Internet Therapy and should assist in guiding its continued development, specifically the development of internet-based treatment for individuals living in rural areas who struggle with substance abuse related issues.
