This study explored the perceptions of training needs of school board members in Georgia. The study examined perceptions of school board chairs, board members with 1 to 5 years experience, members with 6 to 10 years experience, members with 11 to 15 years experience and board members with 16 plus years experience in the areas of school board training, methods preferred for training, essential skills needed in the role as a school board member, and the functions that are important as a board member. This study utilized a survey developed by McGeough of the University of South Dakota. The survey had two parts: the first part was demographics of the participant, such as gender, position on the school board, educational background, and career. The second part of the survey dealt with the areas of school board governance in which board members perceive they need training, the preferred methods of training, the skills needed on the school board and the functions that are considered the most important. Sixty-three school board chairs and 240 school board members responded to the survey, which was emailed to all 1,044 school board members. The board members had two weeks to comply before the survey was unavailable. This study identified two areas that board members noted as needing additional training: roles and responsibilities and budget. Board members also noted that they prefer the training be provided in comprehensive seminars that last one to two days or mini-seminars that last one to four hours, and did not favor audio tapes as a way to gain additional training. They also reported that decision-making skills and fiscal responsibility skills were most important, and perceived their highest function is to keep children first as well as the functions of the board and administration. The recommendations of this study center on modifying the amount of training board members must obtain. Additional research is needed on providing the training the board members perceived to be important and to present the information in various forms so that both experienced and inexperienced board members will receive meaningful instruction.
