Gichuru, Margaret
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Idaho State University
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of chief diversity officers (CDOs) and how they enhanced admission of minority students in the post-affirmative action era. Six chief diversity officers, who played a pivotal leadership role in diversity of their respective campuses, described their experiences. Using phenomenological methodology to collect and analyze the data, each participant was interviewed and all described their experiences in depth. The analysis generated the following common themes (a) the varied roles of CDO, (b) partnership, (c) post-affirmative action era examined, (d) changes in admission, (e) challenges in admission, and (f) future of diversity. Within the themes, several initiatives applied by chief diversity officers to enhance admission of minority students emerged, such as revising the wording of policies and scholarships, implementing more race neutral admission policies, recruiting diverse faculty and staff, focusing on retention and graduation of minority students, and partnering with high school and the community. It was evident that the chief diversity officers were hopeful about enhancing diversity on the campuses, mainly due to their expertise and personal commitment.
