ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University, San Diego
The problem: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of an Undecided Decision-Making, Goal-Setting Workshop through an examination of changes in grade point averages (GPAs) among participating community college students. The method: To investigate this problem, 98 EOPS undecided students were asked to attend an Undecided Decision-Making, Goal-Setting Workshop. After students attended the workshop, the study tracked their academic performance, concentrating on changes in their GPAs during their 1 st semester as freshmen. These GPAs were then compared to those of the remaining EOPS students who did not attend the workshop. The study utilized 3 classification variables: (a) spring semester units attempted, (b) units completed, and (c) student GPAs. Results: Differences in GPA scores from the 2009 spring and summer semesters showed that students who attended the workshop displayed a significant change in GPA during this period compared to students who did not attend. However, data analysis further determined that there was no significant difference in GPA for students who attended the workshop compared to students who did not attend when sorted by gender. In addition, statistical examination of the data proved that there was no significant difference in GPA based on age among students who did attend the workshop when compared to students who did not attend the workshop.
