The study examined attributes associated with Hispanic/Latino college student involvement in student organization leadership roles. The study helped identify attributes that active and involved Hispanic/Latino students felt were most important to them and their leadership roles. The roles that peer influence, role model influence, extraversion, self-confidence, self-efficacy, and gender have on the number of leadership positions that Hispanic/Latino students hold were examined. A survey instrument was utilized and distributed at officer meetings of purposively selected student organizations and intact meetings of student organization officers at three different Hispanic serving universities in Texas. The sample included 297 students holding leadership roles at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and The University of Texas at San Antonio. A correlational design was applied to examine the extent of the relationship that each independent variable had on the number of leadership positions that were held by Hispanic/Latino college students. Descriptive statistics about the population being studied were also generated. It was found that peer influence, self-confidence, self-efficacy, and extraversion were statistically significant in the relationship to the number of leadership positions held by Hispanic students in organizational leadership roles. Role model influence and support and gender were found not to be significant in the relationship with the number of leadership roles Hispanic students held. These findings will be of interest to student affairs and other professionals as they develop programs to increase the number of Hispanics in student organizational leadership roles.
