International Students' Perception of Their Undergraduate Experience
Afflick, Barbara E.
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of Delaware
The growing diversity in American society is reflected in a multicultural student population with which managers and educators in higher education interact. Student diversity presents a challenge within higher education, especially in the development of programs that support an environment that is conducive to learning for its students. This project focuses on identifying and examining the perceptions of international students about their undergraduate experiences at Delaware State University. The university has approximately 340 international students from several regions and countries, among them Africa, Asia, Canada, and the Caribbean. Interviews were used to encourage students to reconstruct their experiences through the admission process until the present. During those interviews students covered the intellectual, social, and emotional aspects of their experiences as they progressed through their undergraduate education. The examination of these experiences along with students' concerns will help teachers and management determine how they might plan and implement programs that will fill the needs of international students, and foster a cultural competent atmosphere in which those students will feel more accepted.
