Bologna Trends 2010: The Implementation of the Bologna Process and a Move towards a "New Global Regionalism"
Observatory on Borderless Higher Education
The European University Association, whose members include European higher educations institutions across 46 countries, just published Trends 2010, the sixth in the Trends series, its flagship pan-European report. The principal aim of the 2010 report is to situate and analyse the implementation of the Bologna Process, an initiative to create a European Higher Education Area based on international cooperation and academic exchange, from the viewpoint of European higher education institutions. According to the report, Bologna's decision-making process, whereby higher education institutions voluntarily cooperate with pan-European authorities, has contributed to widespread and rapid higher education reform, yet there is considerable work yet to be done, especially within the broader context of a decade of considerable higher education change worldwide. And indeed, with other regions of the world now building stronger regional networks and partnerships, Bologna may importantly be rendering as much change beyond European borders as within them. What are the main findings of the 2010 Trends report, and which priorities does it outline for the next decade? Is Bologna a contributory factor to the emergence of a "new global regionalism" and the development of regional quasi-blocs?
