Collaboration and Community Change in the Children's Futures Initiative
Walker, Karen E.; Feldman, Amy
Public/Private Ventures
In 2002, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation launched Children's Futures (CF), a 10-year community change initiative designed to improve the health and well-being of children from birth to age three throughout Trenton, New Jersey. CF's strategies included efforts to increase residents' access to prenatal and other health services, provide parenting skills education, improve the quality of available childcare and promote preventive healthcare among medical practices. The Foundation engaged Public/Private Ventures (P/PV) to evaluate the implementation and outcomes of the initiative and to provide ongoing feedback on its progress. This report examines the promise of CF strategies. It focuses on program implementation, participant recruitment and collaborations among Trenton's agencies. Chapters include: (1) Introduction; (2) The City of Trenton; (3) Improving the Quality of Child Care; (4) Improving Access to Healthcare; Strengthening Parenting; (5) Improving Fathers' Involvement with Their Children; (6) Community Collaboration in Children's Futures; and (7) Conclusions. Two appendixes include additional information on research methodology; and a scale used to determine if the initiative reached those most in need. (Contains 4 tables, 5 figures, and 16 endnotes.) ["Collaboration and Community Change in the Children's Futures Initiative" was written with Margo Campbell.]
