Kentucky Hispanic School Board Members
Ballestero, Victor; Wright, Sam
Online Submission
The study was designed to provide information on Kentucky Hispanic school board members. The data was obtained from Kentucky school superintendents or their designees in the 174 public school districts through a survey mailed in the spring, 2009. The survey was mailed to Kentucky Superintendents on March 12, 2009. The follow-up survey was mailed on April 20, 2009. We received responses from 162 Kentucky public school districts for a 93.1% return percent. Only one Hispanic school board member was located by the survey. The Hispanic board member was identified in Beechwood Independent School District in northern Kentucky. The one Hispanic board member has served for 10+ years on the board. He is a male board member. Beechwood Independent identified itself as an urban, wealthy school district. No Hispanic school attorneys were identified by the survey. The conclusions for the survey were: (1) A clear majority of Kentucky school districts (161 or 99.4%) do not have any Hispanic school board members. (2) Only one school district in Kentucky has a Hispanic school board member. This is the third research project on Hispanics on Kentucky school districts conducted by Dr. Victor Ballestero and Dr. Sam Wright at Morehead State University. Two appendices are included: (1) Hispanic School Board Member Survey; and (2) Letter to Kentucky School Superintendents.
