CCRC Currents. April 2009
Community College Research Center, Columbia University
This annual newsletter contains updates on the latest CCRC research, new publications and details of upcoming presentations at major conferences. The feature article in this issue, "Addressing the Needs of Underprepared Students," by Thomas Bailey, summarizes the discussion found in the paper "Challenge and Opportunity: Rethinking the Role and Function of Developmental Education in Community College." The author uses some of these findings to outline the broad strategies community colleges are using to address the needs of underprepared students. Much of the research is based on CCRC's work with "Achieving the Dream." The article concludes by offering suggestions for reform. Other sections of this newsletter include: (1) National Center for Postsecondary Research; Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count; (2) Evaluating the Community College Bridges to Opportunity Initiative; (3) Concurrent Courses Initiative: Pathways to College and Careers; (4) Virginia Community College "Gatekeeper" Course Success Study; (5) Student Persistence in Community Colleges; (6) Employer Perceptions of Two-Year Degrees in Information Technology; (7) I-BEST: Accelerating the Transition from Basic Skills to College and a Career Pathway; (8) Postsecondary Content Area Reading-Writing Intervention; (9) Digital Bridge Academy Evaluation; (10) Automotive Manufacturing Collaborative; (11) Announcements; (12) Upcoming Conference Presentations; and (13) Selected Publications.
