Iowa College Student Aid Commission: Response to Statewide Disasters of 2008
Greiner, Keith R.
Online Submission
In the Summer of 2008, the state of Iowa suffered from a series of disasters that left 84 of the state's 99 counties as declared disaster areas. The Iowa College Student Aid Commission and the Governor of Iowa responded to the disasters by providing special grants to individuals who were affected by tornadoes and floods of the summer. This report summarizes the disasters that occurred in 2008 and the disaster relief that was provided for college and university students. Four hundred and fourteen individuals received grants under the program. Maps of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) applications for disaster relief and the student aid awards show that the assistance for students closely parallels the verified applications for assistance. Iowa counties with the greatest number of grants to college students included Linn, (Cedar Rapids) with 123 awards, Black Hawk, (Cedar Falls/Waterloo) with 59 awards, and Polk (Des Moines) with 44 awards. Appended are: (1) National Climate Data Center, Climate of 2008; (2) Photographs of the Iowa's disasters of 2008; and (3) Rebuild Iowa Office, Timeline of Events of 2008; (Contains 3 tables and 2 maps.)
