Course Expectations and Career Management Skills
Kennedy, Marnie L.; Haines, Ben
National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER)
Course completion and student satisfaction is likely to be influenced by how realistic the expectations of students are when they enroll. This report explores the idea that students' expectations would be more realistic if students have well developed career management competencies. Recent research argues that lack of information is not the problem; rather, it is having the broad skills (career management competencies) required to effectively locate, navigate, and use career information (Viljamaa, Patton & McMahon 2006) and to effectively navigate the world of work (McMahon, Patton & Tathan 2003) that is important. While this perspective is common throughout the career development field, it is less apparent in the VET sector (Patton 2000). The report noted that the issues of poor information access, based on parents' and students' perceptions, were not related to the lack of available information per se but, rather, an inability to effectively navigate the information and apply it to their own situation. The report identified the following information needs: (1) linkages of aptitudes and interests to occupations; (2) descriptions of similar jobs; (3) occupations in high demand; (4) conditions of employment, rights and responsibilities under training contracts; and (5) the career and occupation pathways likely to flow from various VET pathways.
