"The Metropolitan Life Survey of the American Teacher, 1999: Violence in America's Public Schools: Five Years Later" revisits issues addressed in a 1993 study (ED397190), and compares findings of the two studies on the issue of school violence from the perspectives of students, teachers, and law enforcement officers across the country, about the increasing violence and fears of violence in their schools. This report is part of an annual series of surveys conducted since 1984 for MetLife by Harris Interactive (formerly Louis Harris & Associates) to bring the voices of those closest to the classroom to the attention of policy makers and the public at large about important issues in education. Topics discussed include the prevalence and characteristics of violence in public schools, teachers' and students' personal experiences with violence, weapons and self-protection, perspectives on the causes of violence, as well as solutions to this problem. In addition, the current study addresses new topics, such as gangs, gender, role models, as well as perspectives on violence in schools in the future. The following are appended: (1) School Methodology; and (2) Survey Methodology for Teachers and Law Enforcement Officials. (Contains 216 exhibits.)
