Citizenship education is an important part of the development of young adults, enabling them to learn about their rights and responsibilities, and to understand how society works. Video is an effective medium for young people to express their views and, through involvement in a production process, they are able to learn more about putting forward a case or argument. Video is particularly useful in a citizenship context, because it allows young people to consider issues of concern to them and to develop their thinking about the wider social and political implications of their chosen topic. Making a citizenship video achieves this by requiring young people to think about their chosen topic in depth, to consider a range of views on a subject, and sometimes to represent views which are not necessarily their own. This pack is intended to be a practical and accessible guide to citizenship teaching and learning through video production. The seven activities presented are: (1) Knowing the Audience--Screening; (2) Using Images and Symbols to Present an Issue; (3) Researching and Developing a Proposal; (4) Developing Treatments, Scripts, and Storyboards; (5) Vox-Pops--Canvassing Opinion; (6) Presenting a Point of View; and (7) Conducting an Interview. The aim of the activities in this pack is to help young people to consider citizenship issues by beginning to think like a video producer. The emphasis here is content over style; those interested in producing a citizenship video should not be put off by limitations in the technology available. Indeed, many of the activities do not require the use of a video camera at all. The DVD included with this booklet includes four videos, three of which were made by young people which will be needed for some of the activities. The DVD also includes ROM content, which can be accessed by using a DVD-ROM drive on a personal computer. The ROM content includes electronic copies of all the resource sheets included in this booklet for use with activities
