Much of what students learn never appears to connect to their lives. They learn facts, they study events, and they read stories of others. Teachers need to help students make these associations, and sometimes that means expanding the curriculum. To help her language arts students make connections between their lives and the realities of life during World War II, one eighth grade teacher included an exploration of the American home front during the war in the class's literary study. The students held a Home Front Fair on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, complete with a USO Canteen, and General Store and Gas Station, a ration-coupon consumer activity, and a radio-news broadcast, all based on things they had learned during their individual research. These stations provided students with interdisciplinary learning activities, and allowed them to use their different intellectual strengths to share their work with relatives and community members--and most importantly, helped them connect their history and literature lessons with their own experiences.
