Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v13 n5 Sep-Oct 2005
In this article, the author proposes and discusses a collection of ten governance habits of boards of trustees that distinguish the average board from those that perform with excellence. They are interconnected, interlocking, and systemic. In the aggregate, the benefits of these habits are greater than the sum of their parts, because they function together to spawn a culture of board governance that equips trustees to fulfill their responsibilities with distinction. The habits suggested are as follows: (1) Select the right president; (2) Select the right board chair; (3) Empower the committee on trustees; (4) Insist on a strategic vision; (5) Set goals and assess performance; (6) Understand and monitor academic policy; (7) Develop future board leaders; (8) Structure the board strategically; (9) Embrace board education; and (10) Make trusteeship enjoyable.
