Getting Ready to Read with Readers Theatre
Barchers, Suzanne I; Pfeffinger, Charla R.
Greenwood Press
Readers theatre is a presentation by two or more participants who read from scripts and interpret a literary work in such a way that the audience imaginatively senses characterization, setting, and action. This book offers 50, two-page reproducible scripts to entice the preschool and kindergarten group into beginning to read. These patterned scripts based on nursery rhymes, clapping rhymes, and other fun things to read are grouped into traditional preschool and kindergarden curricular groupings: animals, community helpers, holidays, and many others. Most scripts have readability ranges from 0.0 to .5 on the Flesh-Kincaid readability scale. Children will learn to read by hearing and repeating and seeing the patterns. The authors include a beginning chapter about props, staging and how to introduce the concept of reading together to these very young children. The six parts comprising the 50 scripts are: (1) The Alphabet, Counting, Colors, and Time; (2) Animals; (3) Familiar Rhymes; (4) Family, Friends, Feelings, and Fun; (5) Food Fun; and (6) Music and Movement.
