Taming the Gang at Animal House
Caires, Matthew R.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v12 n3 May-Jun 2004
Most boards are insulated from misbehavior of college fraternities and sororities. This article shows how they could aid reforms by facilitating partnerships and developing a better understanding of today's Greek culture. To change the current culture, a renewed commitment is needed to develop working partnerships between the key constituencies that make up Greek communities--students, alumni, parents, national and international organizations, and campus administrators. Governing boards have important responsibilities in enhancing such partnerships, and it is sound fiduciary practice for trustees to ask for periodic reports on how their institution supports the partnership for a healthy Greek community. This article details suggestions in terms of (1) encouraging partnerships; (2) student buy-in; (3) gaining wider support; (4) alumni and parent participation; (5) taking on the alcohol problem; and (6) the changing legal landscape. The author concludes by stating that when fraternities behave counterproductively to the institution or their own academic success, the university must intervene to provide additional guidance to the fraternal organizations, not less.
