Sharper Standards for Fund-Raising Integrity
Peterson, Vance T.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v12 n2 Mar-Apr 2004
Recently, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) revised its standards for annual gifts and campaigns. The purpose was to erase ambiguities, establish tighter definitions for certain types of gifts, and ensure greater clarity about best management practices. In addition, the effort created a reliable database of campaign results for CASE members and others that could be used in measuring philanthropy in education and benchmarking institutional results. This article provides guidance based on the new CASE standards that can be used as a basic checklist for institutions and boards interested in assessing their campaign plans, policies, and procedures. Guidance is given in terms of campaign management and gift accounting.
