The purpose of this hearing was to examine the federal role in improving the effectiveness and coordination of sixty-nine Federal programs that are designed to help parents help their young children with child care and early education. Opening statements were delivered by Subcommittee Chairman Senator Lamar Alexander, Tennessee; Ranking Member Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts; Committee Chairman Senator Michael B. Enzi, Wyoming ;and Senator Christopher Dodd, Connecticut. Witness testimonies were heard from: Wade F.
