How We "Do" School: Poems to Encourage Teacher Reflection
Durica, Karen Morrow
International Reading Association (NJ3)
"Just as we 'do' laundry in a certain way...so, too, we 'do' school. As educators, we gather students, we sort them (by grade level, ability, or both), we teach them, we test them, and we grade them." --From the Preface. The 20 thought-provoking poems in this collection are meant to promote reflective conversation about how educators do school. Each poem, on its own merit, will say something to the teachers who read it, but that message may differ depending on knowledge and past experiences. By stimulating your beliefs and feelings about school, you can begin to examine and reflect on your own classroom practices in order to grow as a professional. Included with each poem is a discussion of the impetus for the poem and its connection to current educational practice, as well as reflection questions, a suggested activity, and additional resources for further in-depth reading on the topic. This structure will enable teachers to move from discussion to concrete changes. Following the preface and "Tips for Using Reflective Poetry as Part of Professional Development," this book is divided into five sections. Section I, Reflections about School Environment, presents: (1) How We Do School; (2) I Used to Ask the Questions: Kindergartner's Lament; (3) Museums of Their Souls; and (4) The Feel of a Pencil. Section II, Reflections about Curriculum, continues with: (5) When Spelling Rules; (6) Chapter 14; (7) Dearth of Dictionary Learning; and (8) I Read It Because It's Beautiful. Section III, Reflections about Diversity in the Classroom, continues with: (9) The Labeled Child; (10) My Friend's G/T; (11) I'm Partially Proficient; and (12) Unloved Stories: A Poem for Two Voices. Section IV, Reflections about the Impact of Teachers and Parents, includes: (13) The Man Who Let Me Speak; (14) The Bully; (15) A Man of Power; and (16) The Lasting Gift. Section V, Reflections about the Rewards of Teaching, concludes with: (17) Memories of a First-Year Teacher; (18) My Teacher's Smile; (19) Passion!; and (20) Who Has a Job That Is Better Than Mine? A list of references; and an index are also included.
