The Preparation of Students Entering Kentucky's Public Colleges and Universities in 2002 and 2004. Developmental Education Update
Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education
This update presents information on students entering Kentucky's public postsecondary institutions in 2004, with comparisons to the entering class of 2002. This information updates Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education's 2005 report entitled, "Underprepared Students in Kentucky: A First Look at the 2001 Mandatory Placement Policy." In general, student preparation levels followed the same patterns in 2004 that they did in 2002. Once again, a majority of students entered postsecondary study with at least one developmental need, and math remained the subject of greatest need. The proportion of students who entered postsecondary study with developmental needs in 2004 remained substantial, especially among non-traditional students. Some gains were seen in the preparation of recent high school graduates during the two years under study, although compared to national ACT scores, Kentucky still has significant room for improvement. County maps of the developmental needs of recent Kentucky high school graduates are appended. (Contains 4 figures and 14 tables.)
