The goal of this K-12 science safety resource is to bring together information needed by administrators, planners, teachers and support staff to help them make sound decisions regarding science safety. The document identifies areas for decision making and action at a variety of levels. It supports planning and action by providing information on safety legislation and standards, safety hazards, and example procedures for eliminating or minimizing hazards. The materials in this safety resource have been compiled from sources believed to be reliable and accurate; and to represent the best of current thinking on the subject. This resource is intended to serve as a starting point for planning good practices, but does not purport to specify the level of technical detail that some users may require, or to have anticipated every circumstance where safety may be a factor. This book begins with Part A information on General Safety Management. Planning and policy setting, emergency preparedness and response, facility design, safety equipment and risk management. Part B discusses specific hazards, suggests ways of reducing risks, managing the risks, and identifies official restrictions. Appendices add to the value of this handbook by providing examples of science safety rules and procedures, sample student safety contracts for elementary and secondary levels, a chemical laboratory safety inspection checklist, a sample accident/incident report form, a sample chemical inventory sheet, a list of chemical waste brokers, and sample basic laboratory techniques. An Index is included.
