Daily Physical Activity: A Handbook for Grades 1-9 Schools

Alberta Education has prepared this school handbook to help teachers and administrators select age-appropriate activities that can be done almost anytime and anywhere. The Daily Physical Activity (DPA) school handbook is designed to provide information, ideas and inspiration for developing a successful DPA plan. The handbook is divided into four sections. The first section, Introduction, explains the importance of DPA and presents an overview of the handbook. The second section, Teachers, includes information on considering the needs of students, female students and physical activity, planning for implementation, linking cross-curricular outcomes, involving parents/guardians in the community, active living with staff, and walking ideas and information. Section 3 is about physical activities. It includes an index of physical activities and provides sample activities for classroom or small space areas, gym or open space areas, outdoors, and whole school and large group activities. Section 4 is for administrators and considers support for DPA, promising practices, developing a DPA implementation plan, monitoring the plan and tips on encouraging staff physical activity. The last section contains appendices with various blackline masters for teacher planning and reflection, student self-monitoring, activity and background information, and developing a DPA implementation plan.
